Marilyn Monroe's 'Happy Birthday, Mr. President' gown expected to fetch $3 million at auction

The dress became a piece of American history when Marilyn Monroe wore it in her unforgettable performance of “Happy Birthday, Mr. President,” and more than 50 years later, it will be sold to the highest bidder.

A collection of the late Marilyn Monroe’s belongings will be placed on the auction block later this year, but the iconic dress, emblazoned with more than 2,500 crystals, is expected to be the highlight.

Officials even estimate the sheer dress will fetch no less than $3 million.

The current owner is reportedly a private investor who purchased the gown in a 1999 auction for nearly $1.3 million.

Monroe donned the sheer dress on stage at Madison Square Garden as she serenaded President John F. Kennedy during a sultry performance in celebration of his 45th birthday.

The intimate performance soon led to speculation of an affair between Monroe and the president.

“Jean Louis created this amazing gown which gave the illusion that Marilyn was in fact wearing nothing at all, except it was bedazzled in over 2,500 crystals,” said Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien’s Auctions. “The crystals had to be strategically placed on the dress to make sure that there was no fashion faux pas.”

Monroe died just three months after the unforgettable performance.

Ryan Lochte suspended for 10 months over Rio gas station incident

Ryan Lochte suspended for 10 months over Rio gas station incident

Ryan Lochte and the three other U.S. swimmers involved in the vandalization of a gas station bathroom in Rio this summer will face a suspension handed down by the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Swimming, according to media reports.

Lochte, who will receive the harshest suspension, will be banned from the sport for 10 months. An official announcement of the punishment is expected to come on Thursday.

Last month, Lochte was charged with making false report of robbery after claiming that he and three fellow U.S. swimmers were robbed at gunpoint after competing at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He faces up to 18 months in prison if convicted.

Lochte left Brazil early, but his three teammates — James Feigen, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger — were detained and questioned by police, at which point their story began to unravel. All three were eventually released, with Feigen later donating $11,000 to a Brazilian charity.

After the events came to light, a slew of sponsors — including Speedo, Ralph Lauren and mattress company Airweave — severed ties with Lochte.

Former Steelers great Jerome Bettis gives ultimate praise to Rams running back Todd Gurley

Former Steelers great Jerome Bettis gives ultimate praise to Rams running back Todd Gurley

There may not be a player in the NFL right now that will be more fun to watch than Todd Gurley.

His powerful, pounding technique combined with his speedy strides and electric personality make him a rare commodity – one the Los Angeles Rams are happy to have at the front of their program.

That doesn’t go unnoticed to one Hall of Fame running back. When asked about the league’s best man, Jerome Bettis didn’t hesitate:

The connections between the two are uncanny. Just look through highlight reels of the powerhouse running backs. They don’t call him “The Bus” and promote #FeedGurley for no reason.

But aside from their hammering running abilities, they’ve both had the misfortune of suffering vicious football-related injuries.

Bettis suffered multiple joint injuries throughout his 13-year career. It’s almost unavoidable in a sport as physical as football – and especially over a career-span that long.

Gurley, however, suffered a major injury early in his career. A fourth-quarter ACL tear cut his last season at the University of Georgia short. But months later, he was drafted 13th overall in the 2014 NFL Draft – and he became the third Rams rookie to rush for 1,000 or more yards in a season.

The last Rams running back to do that? Jerome Bettis.

Now, Bettis is joining forces with an orthopedic company so that athletes, like Gurley, are aware of the options they have when it comes to maintaining their health in a physical sport like football.

“I want to let these guys know that they can manage the pain better,” Bettis says. “Your entire quality of life can change.”

Stryker is the global leader in the medical technology industry. The company offers a wide range of innovative products and services in orthopedics to help improve patient and hospital outcomes. Stryker is the official joint replacement products of the PGA Tour, but Bettis is its proud football ambassador.

He also wants to educate the public on what options they have when it comes to joint pain.

“You don’t have to deal with these chronic joint pains,” Bettis says. “I think that was a misunderstanding I had. I just assumed that was part of the deal. Now, I understand that chronic pain is not part of the deal. You can do something about it.”

Why it's nearly impossible for Apple to beat Rolex

Why it's nearly impossible for Apple to beat Rolex

In Apple’s keynote today announcing its new smartwatch, the company claimed that it was the number 2 watchmaker in the world for watch sales in 2015, right behind Rolex.

Apple touted this as a huge achievement — and it is. But many expected Apple to take the top spot with its irresistible gadgets that cost less than most of its Swiss and luxury watch competitors.

So how does Rolex keep a giant like Apple — which sells a much cheaper, hyped-up product — at bay?

“Ultimately, [Rolex is] the king of the watch world. In terms of mass produced luxury high-end watches, the only one that even comes close would be Omega,” Ben Clymer, editor of Hodinkee, told us in April. “And they’re really not that close at the end of the day.”

Rolex is Rolex for a reason. And that reason is the status and reputation the brand has cultivated over its 100 years of existence. Rolex’s cult of personality is no accident.

“Actual innovation in the watchmaking field is what propels Rolex to where they are now,” Clymer said.

To cement its status, Rolex never stopped inventing. They came up with the first waterproof case, the first self-winding watch, the first watch with a date, and (arguably) one of the first driving chronographs, which is used to measure lap times. On top of these innovations in watchmaking in the first half of the 1900s, Rolex developed a reputation being reliable.

Rolex now touts this history in its advertising, attempting to make customers feel as though they’re buying into a legacy instead of just the hottest new thing.

This helps explain why earlier this year, even though a luxury brand report rated the Apple Watch the most talked about luxury watch, Rolex was still rated highest on the “passion index,” which measured how favorable that talk was.

The future, however, remains to be seen. With the release of an entirely new watch line, the Apple Watch Series II contains a few much-asked for features, like water resistance and GPS. The Swiss watch industry as a whole is also facing headwinds, though it’s tough to say how that is affecting Rolex specifically.

For now, though, the king of watches keeps its crown.
